Low carb diets are the craze right now. Followers of Paleo, Atkins, and other low-carb ketogenic style diets restrict or even eliminate carbohydrate foods altogether from their diets, leaving them with a high fat diet. And now high fat diets are becoming popular among athletes; believing they can power themselves on fat as well as if not better than high carb athletes.

However, the fact remains that every cell in the human body is powered by sugars, or carbohydrates. It would appear these high fat athletes are trying to go against nature. If so, what are the negative consequences? Are they able to perform as well as they could be if they were eating a high carb diet instead?

Identical twins were put on a high carb or low fat diet. Both had not eaten for 12 hours and then raced each other up a steep hill on their bikes. The high fat twin ate butter while the high carb twin ate sugar before ascending the hill.
